This blog is dedicated to the Marines who served with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 334 (VMFA-334) in Vietnam. We were a United States Marine Corps fighter squadron
who flew the F-4 Phantom. Please send us your stories and photos.
Reading through “Phantom Phury,” I came across the mission where George Libey and Bill Frizell were working with “Cat Killer” FAC. The O-1 Bird Dog pilot was Capt Charles Finch, Catkiller 19, of the US Army 220th Reconnaissance Airplane Company. When the F-4 was hit and headed feet wet, Finch followed them and orbited over the dinghy until the Jolly Green arrived and winched George Libey aboard. He even managed to snap a few photos of the event, which I’m sure he’d be happy to share. As an aside, the Catkillers were regularly sent north of the DMZ on counter-battery missions. It was not a healthy environment for 100kt Cessnas. In fact, he took a hit from a 12.7 while the F-4s were making runs on the AAA position. Charlie can be contacted on CFINCH4444@aol.com.
